Meaning / Definition

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that occur in people who are inclined to a specific attitude, action,or condition where the comsumption of gluten damages the small intestine.  

 


Causes and Effects

-When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system forms antibodies to gluten which then attack the intestinal lining This causes inflammation in the intestine and damages the villi, the hair-like structures on the lining of the small intestine.

 

 

 


Signs and Symptoms

  • Digestive problems (*abdominal bloating, pain, gas, diarrhea, pale stools, and weight loss)
  • A severe skin rash called **dermatitis herpetiformis.
  • Iron deficiency anemia (low blood count)
  • Musculoskeletal problems (muscle cramps, joint and bone pain)

Prevention 

-There is no cure for celiac disease, the only treatment is a gluten-free diet. 

-Avoid all foods made from wheat, rye, and barley. Examples are breads, cereals, pasta, crackers, cakes, pies, cookies, and gravies. 

 

-Pay attention to processed foods that may contain gluten. Wheat flour is a common ingredient in many processed foods. Examples of fo

ods that may contain gluten include: 

  • Ice cream
  • Candy bars
  • Instant coffee
  • Pasta
