1A3_2013 Group 8 - Polar Region Team members

Names / Roles:

  • Cathryn Png      (Leader)
  • Kamaliah       (Wiki Writer)
  • JuanQing     (Researcher)
  • Chan JunHao     (Researcher)
  • Haikel    (Researcher)

Overview

In this section, include a brief description of the allocated ecosystem. You should include the following information:

  • arctic ecosystem Polar Region

  • Description of ecosystem - The polar region is the coldest place on earth. There are two main polar regions in the world which are the Arctic and the Antarctic.
  • Biodiversity of ecosystem  - Life in the polar region depends on their daily meals

Physical Factors

Search the Internet for information on the following physical factors in the allocated ecosystem.

  • Light (availability of sunlight in the ecosystem), Hardly seeing sun in the winter, but having sun 24 hours a day during summer.
  • Temperature (temperature of the ecosystem), -88 to 15 degree
  • Water (water quality in the ecosystem), water in the polar region has less salt then the mid -Atlantic as the water in polar region have a lower freezing point as the polar region temperature is always lower the 0 degree
  • Air (quality of air in the ecosystem),

Classification of Living Organisms

Classify at least eight of the living organisms found in the allocated ecosystem into the categories below:

  1. Producers-Lichens,Red algae
  2. Primary Consumers- Fish, Birds
  3. Secondary Consumers- Polar Bears,Penguins, Sea Lions,seals
  4. Tertiary Consumers- Whale, Wolfs,Killer Whale.
  5. Decomposers - Bacteria

For each of the living organism, find a picture and write a short description on the organism. You may wish to include feeding habits, region in the ecosystem where it is normally found etc.

Lichens. Lichens are a symbiotic association of a fungus and an alga. They are not plants

Red algae. Thought algae look like plants, they are not classified in the plant kingdom.

Penguins. Feeds on the fishes in the deep blue sea.

Wolves. Top predators  of the Arctic tundra. Feeds on animals living in the polar region.

Food Web

Create a food web using at least eight of the living organisms listed above. You may wish to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create your food web. Save your food web as a picture. Finally copy and paste your picture in this section of your wiki.

Interrelationship in Ecosystem

Give at least one example for each of the following relationships in the ecosystem:

  1. predator prey -relationship( polar bear  in the polar region eats  fishes)
  2. Parasitism
  3. Mutualism- Example between carribou and the vegetation. The carribou eats the vegetation, and the carribou's waste provides fertilizer for the plants.

Useful Links

Plagarism is a strongly discouraged.

Include the links of all websites you obtained information from to complete your ecology wiki.

For example:

Wild World @ nationalgeographic.com ( http://www.nationalgeographic.com/wildworld/terrestrial.html )
