Overview

In this section, include a brief description of the allocated ecosystem. You should include the following information:

  • The deep sea is the lowest layer in the ocean, existing below the thermocline and above the seabed, at a depth of 1800m or more.
  • Little or no light penetrates this part of the ocean and most of the organisms that live there rely for subsistence on falling organic matter produced in the photiczone
  • These creatures must survive in extremely harsh conditions, such as hundreds of bar of pressure, small amounts of oxygen, very little food, no sunlight, and constant, extreme cold. Most creatures have to depend on food floating down from above.

These creatures live in very harsh environments such as the abyssal or hadal zones, which, being thousands of meters below the surface, are almost completely devoid of light. The water is between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius and has low oxygen levels. Due to the depth, the pressure is between 20 and 1,000 bar. Creatures that live hundreds or even thousands of meters deep in the ocean have adapted to the high pressure, lack of light, and other factors.

Physical Factors

Search the Internet for information on the following physical factors in the allocated ecosystem.

  •   The dark, cold waters of much of the deep sea have adequate oxygen. This is because cold water can dissolve more oxygen than warm water, and the deepest waters generally originate from shallow polar seas. In certain places in the northern and southern seas, oxygen-rich waters cool off so much that they become dense enough to sink to the bottom of the sea
  • Except in polar waters, the difference in temperature between the euphotic, or sunlit, zone near the surface and the deep sea can be dramatic because of thermoclines, or the separation of water layers of differing temperatures. In the tropics, for example, a layer of warm water over 20 Degrees floats on top of the cold, dense deeper water

Classification of Living Organisms

Classify at least eight of the living organisms found in the allocated ecosystem into the categories below:

  1. Phototsyntestic Algae
  2. Planktons, small prawns (They Feed on Algae)
  3. FireFly Squid and Vampire squids (They both eat planktons etc)
  4. Angler Fish and Viper Fish (Both of them top predators)
  5. Marine Worms (these worms bury themselves beneath the surface of the underwater floor while they slowly move about, cleaning up detritus (waste) and leftover organic matter and turning it into something that other plants and animals can use. They too feed on algae)

For each of the living organism, find a picture and write a short description on the organism. You may wish to include feeding habits, region in the ecosystem where it is normally found etc.

Food Web

Create a food web using at least eight of the living organisms listed above. You may wish to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create your food web. Save your food web as a picture. Finally copy and paste your picture in this section of your wiki.

Interrelationship in Ecosystem

Give at least one example for each of the following relationships in the ecosystem:

  1. Angler fish and Firefly squid
  2. Parasitism
  3. Marine worms and algae
