Overview

In this section, include a brief description of the allocated ecosystem. You should include the following information:

  • Location of the ecosystem: Earth

Sand dunes in the Rub' al Khalihttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/34/Rub_al_Khali_002.JPG/320px-Rub_al_Khali_002.JPG

Desert is a landscape which does not support growth of most plants as there is low amount of precipitation. Most desert has an average annual precipitation of 400mm or lower. There are deserts that are cold and hot. Gobi Desert is one of the cold desert and has an extreme temperatures.

Not all deserts have sandy dunes. Some are barren land covered with bare rocks.

There are 2 types. Biotic and abiotic. Abiotic are non living things which are light, water, air, sand and temperatures. Biotic are living things which are scorpion, coyotes, snakes, lizards, cacti and so on.

Physical Factors

Search the Internet for information on the following physical factors in the allocated ecosystem.

  • Light (availability of sunlight in the ecosystem): Receive more than 12 hours of light per day.
  • Temperature (temperature of the ecosystem): In summer +40°C or higher in daytime. At nighttime it is 0°C or lower in the winter.
  • Water (water quality in the ecosystem): Less water as it only has an approximately 400mm of rain falls annually. Varies on desert location. Some has more rain falls than others.
  • Air (quality of air in the ecosystem): Air is hot in hot desert. Cold in cold desert. Sandy in sandy desert.
  • pH (acidic or alkaline environment in the ecosystem): Alkaline soil.

Classification of Living Organisms

Classify at least eightof the living organisms found in the allocated ecosystem into the categories below:

Producers

          Cactus

Primary Consumers

          It feeds on snake.

Decomposers

For each of the living organism, find a picture and write a short description on the organism. You may wish to include feeding habits, region in the ecosystem where it is normally found etc.

Interrelationship in Ecosystem

Give at least one example for each of the following relationships in the ecosystem:

  • Predator-prey relationship
  • Eagle eats snake.
  • Parasitism
  • Consumers getting their water from leaves.
  • Mutualism
  • Plants giving food to their consumers. Consumers help plants by dispersing their seeds.

Some areas of improvements:
1. Provides some examples for the points mentioned in physical factors.
2. More details on what producers the primary consumers feed on and more descriptions about the consumers too.
3. You miss out on the decomposers.
4. More explanations on the interrelationships.
