Overview

1) In this section, write sentences to describe the Mangrove Swamps.

2) Use the infomation from the website and books you have read from.

3) You should include the following :

  • Location of the ecosystem:
  • Description of ecosystem: (what does this ecosystem look like, what animals and plants are found there, what kind of weather /climate)
  • Biodiversity of ecosystem (richness of life/types of plants and animals in ecosystem - can use pictures):                                                       Location of the ecosystem:

Description of ecosystem:Mangrove swamps, to most people, look like muddy, swampy places filled with mosquitoes, snakes and spiders.

Mangroves act as a home for a diverse range of organisms.
These organisms include:

Mangrove swamps are rich habitats full of animals like the snowy egret, white ibis, brown pelican, frigatebirds, cormorants, mangrove cuckoos, herons, manatees, monkeys, turtles, lizards like anoles, red-tailed hawks, eagles, sea turtles, American alligators and crocodiles. The mangrove roots house smaller animals like the mangrove tree crab, spotted mangrove crab, snails, barnacles, oysters, mussels, anemones, and sponges. Many more lives in the mangrove

 Biodiversity of ecosystem:

Physical Factors

Search the Internet for information on the following physical factors in the Mangrove Swamps ecosystem.

  • Light (availability of sunlight in the ecosystem)Through out the year there will be sunlight and rain.

  • Temperature (temperature of the ecosystem) Mudflats are exposed to sunlight during low tides and become very hot
  • Water (water quality in the ecosystem)
  • Overall, the water quality is either relatively unpolluted or weakly polluted.
  • Air (quality of air in the ecosystem)Fresh air

Classification of Living Organisms

Classify at least eightof the living organisms found in the Mangrove Swamps ecosystem into the categories below:

  1. Producers
  2. Primary Consumers
  3. Secondary Consumers
  4. Tertiary Consumers
  5. Decomposers

For each of the living organism, find a picture and write a short description on the organism.

Write down where the plant / animal can be found, what the animal feeds on and how it survives / escapes from being eaten or killed.

Producers are the mangrove

Primary Consumers are Crabs, plantain squirrel and many more. They are found on mudflats and on trees.

Secondary Consumers are Archer Fishes,Manatees and many more. They are found inside the water.

Tertiary Consumers are Water Monitor Lizards,Carnivorous Birds[that eat meat](king fishers  etc.)

Decomposers are Fungi(Mushroom,etc.)

Food Web

Create a food web using at least eight of the living organisms listed above. You may wish to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create your food web. Save your food web as a picture. Finally copy and paste your picture in this section of your wiki.

Interrelationship in Ecosystem

Give at least one example for each of the following relationships in the ecosystem:

  • Predator-prey relationship
  • Parasitism
