Overview

1) In this section, write sentences to describe the Desert.

2) Use the infomation from the website and books you have read from.

3) You should include the following :

  • Location of the ecosystem : The location most of it was in africa
  • Description of ecosystem: (what does this ecosystem look like, what animals and plants are found there, what kind of weather /climate) : The ecosystem looks drought . There are many animals in the ecosystems such as Zebra , Lion , Cheetah , Elephant and many more . The types of plants are found in the ecosystems are Acacrad , Dry grass , acacia and many more . The kind of weather is very hot and it looks dry .
  • Biodiversity of ecosystem (richness of life/types of plants and animals in ecosystem - can use pictures): ScienceDaily (Apr. 24, 2008) — In the first experiment involving a natural environment, scientists at Brown University have shown that richer plant diversity significantly enhances an ecosystem's productivity.

Physical Factors

Search the Internet for information on the following physical factors in the desert ecosystem.

  • Light (availability of sunlight in the ecosystem): Light is everywhere in our world. We need it to see: it carries information from the world to our eyes and brains. Seeing colors and shapes is second nature to us, yet light is a perplexing phenomenon when we study it more closely.
  • Temperature (temperature of the ecosystem): The temperature with a narrow range allows the organismto survive. It varies from 5 to 35degree Celsius. There is an exception for spores, seeds and some other organisms. The prokaryotes occur in the hightemperatures ofhot spring and in the low temperatures of permafrost. They vary from 90 to minus 50degree Celsius. The temperature zone varies in the different parts of earth. There are different areas which are referred as tropical, subtropical, temperate and alpine.
  • Water (water quality in the ecosystem): Queensland has a wide diversity of waters ranging from upland streams of the Great Divide out to the coastal waters of the Barrier Reef. They include streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, estuaries, embayments and open coastal waters. These waters are important both to the economy of Queensland and for the many recreational benefits they provide. They also have their own intrinsic natural values.
  • Air (quality of air in the ecosystem): We breathe a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, water, argon, carbon dioxide and other trace gases, inhaling this mixture some 26,000 times each day, a volume of about 14,000 litres.Poor air quality principally affects respiratory and cardiovascular systems. People who spend a lot of time outdoors when air quality is poor increase their exposure to air pollutants: symptoms can include burning eyes and nose, itchy irritated throat, coughing and troubled breathing.

Classification of Living Organisms

Classify at least eightof the living organisms found in the Desert ecosystem into the categories below:

  1. Producers : Green Plant such as tree
  2. Primary Consumers : zebra's , Giraffe's AND Elephant's
  3. Secondary Consumers : Leapord's AND Cheetah's
  4. Tertiary Consumers : Lion's
  5. Decomposers : Bacteria

For each of the living organism, find a picture and write a short description on the organism.

Write down where the plant / animal can be found, what the animal feeds on and how it survives / escapes from being eaten or killed.

Food Web

Create a food web using at least eight of the living organisms listed above. You may wish to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create your food web. Save your food web as a picture. Finally copy and paste your picture in this section of your wiki.

Interrelationship in Ecosystem

Give at least one example for each of the following relationships in the ecosystem:

  • Predator-prey relationship : (Leapord and zebra): The Leapord will Eat the Zebra's up .
  • Parasitism : (Bacteria and Lion) : The Bacteria will go in to the Lion body .

Useful Links

Plagiarism is a strongly discouraged.

Include the links of all websites you obtained information from to complete your ecology wiki.

For example:
