Meaning / Definition

Lactose Intolerance means the body cannot easily digest lactose, a type of natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. It includes cheese and ice cream.

'The Ailing Matisse tries cutting out meat and dairy products.'

Causes and Effects

According to scientists and health researchers, Lactose intolerance can be caused by several factors:

•Secondary lactase defiency. This form occurs when your small intestine is affected either by an illness or a surgery. Other diseases associated with this intolerance is Crohn's disease.

•There is the common type, which is the primary lactase defiency that starts at a young age. The first produce plenty of lactate, which is crucial for a baby's growth. However, as children replace milk with alternative, the lactate might decrease but it still is high for digesting the amount of dairy. In an adult diet, lactase production falls sharply, making dairy products hard for digestion in adult years.

•The Congenital lactase deficiency. It is one of the rarest disease in the 3. This disorder is passed from generation in a pattern of inheritance (autosomal recessive)  that the mother and father must pass on the gene variant for a child to be affected. Premature babies might also carry the lactose intolerance gene as of the insufficient level.

Meanings:

lactase - an enzyme capable of hydrolyzing lactose into glucose and galactose

lactate - to produce milk

autosomal recessive (disorder)- two copies of an abnormal gene must be present in order for the disease or trait to develop

Signs and Symptoms

If you are lactose intolerant, you will experience one or more of the following symptoms 30 minutes to 2 hours after consuming a milk-based product.

• Abdominal bloating, pain, or cramps

Borborygmi

• Diarrhea

Flatulence

• Nausea, which might be accompanied by vomitting

Meanings:

borborygmi - the stomach makes rumbling or gurgling sounds

flatulence - generating gas in the alimentary canal, as food

Prevention and Treatment

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Lactose intolerance as it might be inherited. However, there is a cure to solve the take in lactase ill symptoms temporarily if we accidentally consumed lactose/lactates.

Step1: Feeling nauseous? lie down immediately if you feel dizzy and try to not fidget.

Step2: Have a switched on fan to eliminate the aggravating smells and let it blow on your body/face so you have enough air.Take slow, deep breaths.

Step3: Take medication if you feel some pain or swelling in your stomach such as bismuth and loperamide.

Step4: Rehydrate yourself if you are having diarrhea by drinking plenty of water and broths. No caffeine or alcohol is to be consumed.

Steps To Prevent And Enjoy Your Food And Lactose Intolerance:

Hey! Even though you are lactose intolerant, you still can enjoy them! However, take note not to have big amounts or you might go to the toilets 6 minutes...

• Eat cheese that contains less lactose such as cheddar cheese and swiss cheese.

• Drink fat-free milk and eat with solid foods that is either non-lactose or has less lactose.

• Choose other milk alternatives such as hazelnut and soy.

• Have a cocoa powder and consume it before eating lactose intolerant foods and also help to slow down the process of which food is emptied from the stomach.

Meanings:

bismuth - a brittle, grayish-white, red-tinged, metallic element used in the manufacture of fusible alloys and in medicine

loperamide - a substance used in the treatment of diarrhea

caffeine - a white, crystalline, bitter alkaloid, usually derived from coffee or tea: used in medicine chiefly as a nervous system stimulant

Link to Other Illnesses or Diseases

There are many illnesses that are really related to this disease itself. So, we decided to name a few.

1)Osteoporosis. People might wonder, "Well, if you don't consume dairy product (which is one part of our diet), aren't your bones going to be weak?" well, yes. As people with lactose intolerance are not able to take in such lactose found in many products, this might be a risk to our bones for protection.

[Don't take my words seriously, but there are researchers that state that this might not be a problem. The ideas might be conflicting. However, if you are worried, there are some tips to still make your bones healthy!]

2)Celiac Disease. At first, what is it? Celiac Disease is a disorder when ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine (just so you were eating healthy, no, you're not). Strange, right? By the way, they are related as lactose intolerance is a side effect of celiac disease. Celiacs who eat gluten would eventually become lactose intolerant as the villi and micro villi in the small intestine gets damaged, hence not capable of breaking down lactose.

Meanings:

conflicting - disagreement, not compatible

gluten - the tough, viscid, nitrogenous substance remaining when the flour of wheat or other grain is washed to remove the starch

villi - one of the minute, wormlike processes on certain membranes, especially on the mucous membrane of the small intestine, where they serve in absorbing nutriment

micro villi - any of the small, fingerlike projections of the surface of an epithelial cell
