Meaning / Definition 

  • Diabetes
    • Often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes the disease in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin
  •  This disease is also hereditary, it can be transferred from parents who previously had it. 

 


 

Causes and Effects

  • There are also 4 major types of diabetes
  • Type 1
    • Usually diagnosed in childhood
    • Affected hereditary
    • Patients with this need daily insulin intake to survive
    • Needs to inject insulin daily as the body doesn’t gives out enough insulin
  • Type 2
    • Most common type
    • Usually occurs in adulthood but diagnosis is increasing in the younger generation
    • Affects many children
    • Body is incapable of in taking insulin
    • Rates increase due to increased obesity and failure to exercise and eat healthily
  • Gestational Diabetes
    • Blood sugar level are high during pregnancy in woman
    • High risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
  • Pre-diabetes
    • Starts with unhealthy eating habits and inadequate exercises
    • Above average blood glucose levels, not high enough to be classified to be under type1 and type2 diabetes 
    • Long term damage to body, including heat and circulatory system

 

 


 

Signs and Symptoms

·         Start to have blurry vision
·         Feel fatigue
·         Thirst
·         Painful urination
·         Frequent urination
·         Sores that do not heal
·         Nausea
·         Vomiting
·         Weight loss
·         Hunger
·         Some cases there would not be signs and symptom, like in type1 diabetes

 

 


 

Prevention and Treatment 

  •  All types of diabetes are treatable.
    • Diabetes type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure 
      • Patients with type 1 are treated with regular insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise
    • Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime, 
      • Patients with Type 2 diabetes are usually treated with tablets, exercise and a special diet, but sometimes insulin injections are also required
    • In general, prevention starts with
      • Better lifestyle
      • Eating heathier
      • Being physically active
      • Take medicine as directed
      • No smoking
      • Control blood pressure
      • Have regular health check up
      • Have blood sugar checked along with weight, blood pressure and feeling

    • common in people with diabetes, which can raise the risk of kidney disease, eye problems, heart attack and stroke
  • Mental health
    • uncontrolled diabetes raises the risk of suffering from depression, anxiety and some other mental disorders
  • Hearing loss
    • diabetes patients have a higher risk of developing hearing problems      
  • Gum disease
    • there is a much higher prevalence of gum disease among diabetes patients
  • Stroke
    • if blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood glucose levels are not controlled, the risk of stroke increases significantly
  • Infections
    • people with badly controlled diabetes are much more susceptible to infections
  •  Healing of wounds

 

      • cuts and lesions take much longer to heal
