Overview about Tropical Rainforest

tropical rainforest is an ecosystem type that occurs roughly within the latitudes 28 degrees north or south of the equator in the equatorial zone between the Tropical of caner and Tropical of capricon. This ecosystem experiences high average temperatures and a significant amount of rainfall. Within the biome classification, tropical rainforests are thought to be a type of the tropical wet forest or tropical moist broadleaf forest  and may also be referred to as lowland equatorial evergreen rainforest

Tropical rainforests can be characterized in two words: warm and wet. Mean monthly temperatures exceed 18 °C(64 °F) during all months of the year.Average annual rainfall is no less than 168 cm 66 in and can exceed 1,000 cm 390 in although it typically lies between 175 cm 69 in and 200 cm 79 in. This high level of precipitation often results in poor soils due to leaching of soluble nutrients.

Animals:

People:

The Pygmies The Pygmies

This Pygmy woman is food outside her hut, with her baby cradled on her back. Mbuti and Baka Pygmies live in the rainforests of Central Africa.  Traditionally they live by hunting and gathering food.
The Huli The Huli

The Huli are one of the many tribes that live in the remote highland forests of Papua New Guniea.  They live by hunting, gathering plants and growing crops.  Men and women live seperately, in large group houses.  The men decorate their bodies with colored clay and wear elaborate headdresses for ceremonies.
The Yanomami The Yanomami

One of the largest groups of Amerindian people in South America is the Yanomami.  Their village life is centered around the yano, or communal house.  The yano is a large, circular building constructed of vine and leaf thatch, which has a living space in the middle.  This picture shows Yanomami men eating a meal.

Physical Factors

In the Tropical Rainforest it is warm and wet lands.  The sun warms the land and sea and the water evaporates into the air. The warm air can hold a lot of water vaporition.

  • Temperature

Warm and wet describes the tropical rain forest climate.  The average annual temperature is above 20 C; there is never a frost.  Rainfall varies widely from a low of about 250cm of rain per year to about 450 cm/year.  That means a range from about 8 to 14 feet of rain per year.

  • Water

Tropical Forest birds and animals would migrate in a bid to source for supplies of water. They have salt water and fresh water mix together they are called brackish water.

Classification of Living Organisms at the Tropical Rainforest ecosystem

The tress. The tress in a main produce to the primary consumer from Tropical Forest is a main living thing home.

  1. Primary Consumers

Orangutan , Sloth and Gorilla is a primary consumer. They are hervivous. They eat fruits and plants.

Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) 2-toed sloth (Cholepus hoffmanni)Gorilla - Gorilla gorilla

  1. Secondary Consumers

Bird-Eating Snake is a Secondary consumer they eat carnivous.

Bird-eating Snake (Pseustes poecilonotus), La Selva, Costa Rica

  1. Tertiary Consumers
  2. Decomposers

For each of the living organism, find a picture and write a short description on the organism.

Write down where the plant / animal can be found, what the animal feeds on and how it survives / escapes from being eaten or killed.

Food Web

Create a food web using at least eight of the living organisms listed above. You may wish to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create your food web. Save your food web as a picture. Finally copy and paste your picture in this section of your wiki.

Interrelationship in Ecosystem

Give at least one example for each of the following relationships in the ecosystem:

  • Predator-prey relationship
  • Parasitism

Useful Links

Plagiarism is a strongly discouraged.

Include the links of all websites you obtained information from to complete your ecology wiki.
